Work Hours: 9–36 hrs/week (Varies according to on-call shift involvement.)

Victim Services of Kenora & Area (VSKA) is a community-based charity located in Kenora, serving Northwestern Ontario across 11 cities and towns and 16 First Nations within Treaty Three Territory. We support victims and survivors in the immediate aftermath of crime or tragedy by collaborating with police, hospitals, and other community service providers. Our work is grounded in a harm reduction approach that respects everyone person’s right to self- determination. We are currently seeking a part-time Victim Services Support Worker to join our interprofessional team.

Position Overview:

As a Victim Services Support Worker, you will be part of a collaborative team providing direct support to survivors, victims, and their families. You will serve as a resource by offering information about available service agencies and making appropriate referrals. Your role will involve advocacy and ongoing communication. You will maintain strong professional boundaries, uphold client confidentiality, and document all interactions using an electronic data management system. This position offers a flexible schedule to accommodate your academic commitments and provides valuable hands-on experience in the social services field. Services are primarily provided remotely, with occasional local travel required. There is also an option to join the on-call rotation for additional hours. Training is provided.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide information, support, and services to those impacted by crime and tragic events.
  • Conduct follow-up with clients and coordinate with community partners as needed.
  • Assist with safety planning, make referrals, provide advocacy and support.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential case records in accordance with organizational policies
    and applicable privacy legislation.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, trauma-informed approach that emphasizes safety,
    empowerment, and cultural respect.
  • Participate in training sessions and ongoing professional development.
    Education & Experience:
  • Currently enrolled in a Social Work or related program at an accredited university or college (preferably in 3rd or 4th year) or hold an Honours Bachelor of Social Work (HBSW) or a degree in a related field.
  • Experience in a similar role or relevant volunteer experience is an asset but not required.
Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong communication, active listening, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and respect for confidentiality.
Requirements:
  • Valid G driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and proof of insurance.
  • Current criminal reference check.
  • Ability to provide 3 personal and 3 professional references.

  • Compassion, empathy, and strong communication skills.
  • An understanding of trauma, including intergenerational, historical, and systemic trauma.
  • Healthy boundaries and a commitment to self-care while supporting others.
  • Respect for Indigenous knowledge systems, with the ability to collaborate with First Nations service providers using culturally safe, Indigenous-led approaches.
  • A strong understanding of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and its impacts on individuals, families, and communities.
  • The ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, interprofessional
    team environment.
